Distributed Consensus and Byzantine Fault Tolerance in Heterogeneous Edge Computing Networks
Prof. Eleanor Vance, Dr. Marcus Thorne, Dr. Sarah Jenkins
Decentralized edge networks operate under intermittent connectivity, variable hardware trust profiles, and strict latency envelopes. Standard Byzantine Fault Tolerant (BFT) consensus protocols incur O(n^2) message complexity, severely degrading throughput in asymmetric edge clusters. In this paper, we introduce HeteroBFT, a tiered leader-election and threshold signature consensus mechanism designed specifically for heterogeneous edge topologies. HeteroBFT partitions nodes into latency-bounded verification enclaves while guaranteeing safety and liveness under up to 33% adversarial or partitioned nodes. We provide formal proofs of safety using the Coq proof assistant and evaluate our prototype across a 120-node geo-distributed testbed. Experimental results demonstrate a 4.2x reduction in round-trip consensus latency and a 68% decrease in cross-enclave network bandwidth compared to standard Raft and PBFT baselines.
Formal Verification of Smart Contract Safety Properties Using Automated SMT Solvers
Prof. Alexey Chen, Dr. Liam O'Connor
Smart contracts on programmable blockchains govern billions in decentralized financial assets, yet vulnerabilities such as re-entrancy, arithmetic overflow, and unexpected delegatecall states remain prevalent. Traditional dynamic symbolic execution tools suffer from state explosion and fail to provide inductive invariant guarantees across arbitrary transaction sequences. We present VeriSolv, an automated verification pipeline translating Solidity bytecode directly into horn clauses solved via Z3 and Eldarica SMT solvers. VeriSolv synthesizes candidate inductive invariants over state transition systems and formally disproves re-entrancy reachability. Evaluated against 1,840 verified mainnet contracts, VeriSolv detected 99.4% of known historical exploit vulnerabilities with zero false negatives in certified proofs.
Zero-Overhead Memory Safety in Systems Programming via Compile-Time Ownership Tracking
Dr. Hiroshi Tanaka, Dr. Maria Rodriguez
Spatial and temporal memory errors account for over 70% of high-severity vulnerabilities in legacy infrastructure software written in C and C++. While runtime memory sanitizers and garbage-collected runtimes offer remediation, they introduce non-deterministic latency and significant memory overhead unacceptable in real-time operating systems. We introduce ChronoSafe, a static compiler extension implementing affine type systems and lifetime interval analysis within LLVM. ChronoSafe enforces pointer provenance and exclusive ownership at compile time without requiring garbage collection or runtime fat-pointers. Microbenchmarks on the SPEC CPU2017 suite show zero runtime throughput penalty and less than 1.8% compilation time overhead, validating compile-time ownership as a viable paradigm for safety-critical kernel development.
Implicit Policy Regularized Preference Optimization (IRPO) for Aligning Large Language Models
Dr. Aris Thorne, Dr. Priya Sharma, Prof. David K. Sutton
Aligning Large Language Models (LLMs) with human feedback via Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) has emerged as an efficient alternative to Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF). However, standard DPO enforces a static reference policy regularization that leads to likelihood displacement and degradation on complex reasoning tasks. In this work, we propose Implicit Policy Regularized Preference Optimization (IRPO), a mathematically sound preference optimization objective where the chosen response distribution serves as an implicit dynamic reference anchor. IRPO guarantees bounded KL-divergence while eliminating brittle temperature hyperparameters and reward model drift. Across extensive evaluations on AlpacaEval 2.0, GSM8K, and MT-Bench using 8B and 70B parameter models, IRPO achieves a 4.8% win-rate gain over DPO and a 3.1% gain over KTO, demonstrating robust adherence to human preference guidelines.
Autonomous Discovery of High-Throughput Photovoltaic Materials via Graph Neural Networks
Dr. Sarah Jenkins, Prof. Kenji Sato, Dr. Kwesi Mensah
Accelerated transition to renewable energy necessitates rapid discovery of stable, non-toxic halide perovskites with optimal bandgaps. Traditional Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations require substantial supercomputing hours per candidate composition. We present CrystalGraph-Net, an equivariant crystal graph neural network integrating 3D atomic coordinates and rotational equivariance to predict electronic band structure, thermal decomposition enthalpy, and moisture degradation kinetics. By coupling CrystalGraph-Net with an active learning Bayesian optimization loop, our framework screened over 180,000 lead-free double perovskite candidates in under 72 hours. We experimentally synthesized and verified the top candidate, Cs2AgBiBr6-doped alloys, demonstrating a 22.4% power conversion efficiency and over 1,200 hours of continuous operational stability under ambient humidity.
Robust Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning Under Partial Observability and Latency Fluctuations
Prof. Eleanor Vance, Dr. Liam O'Connor, Prof. David K. Sutton
Cooperative multi-agent systems in autonomous robotics, fleet management, and smart grid coordination require decentralized policy execution under stochastic network latency and sensor occlusion. Existing centralized training with decentralized execution (CTDE) algorithms, such as MAPPO and QMIX, exhibit catastrophic coordination breakdown when message delivery delays exceed single-step decision intervals. We present Latency-Resilient Multi-Agent Policy Optimization (LR-MAPO), incorporating belief-state recurrent memory encoders and delayed reward credit assignment via temporal-difference bootstrapping. LR-MAPO provides theoretical convergence bounds under non-Markovian observational delays. In StarCraft Multi-Agent Challenge (SMAC) and autonomous drone swarm simulations with up to 300ms packet latency jitter, LR-MAPO maintains a 91.2% coordination success rate, exceeding state-of-the-art baselines by 38.6%.
